Children in Need

On Friday 14thSilverhill Primary again supported Children in Need by paying 50p to wear our slippers and pyjamas for the day. All the children, teachers and even the kitchen staff looked warm and snug in a range of nightwear, from dressing gowns to onesies and so far have raised a fantastic £370 for a great cause. Well done everyone!

Table Tennis

Well done to all the year 5 and 6 pupils who took part in the Derby City SSP table tennis competition. Great fun was had by all and super sportsmanship shown by everyone!

Remembrance

It was a great honour and privilege to welcome so many parents, friends and members of our local community to Silverhill for our Service of Remembrance on the centenary anniversary of Armistice Day. The attendance of members of the British Legion as well as past and present serving members of the armed services added great authenticity and relevance to the children. We were also incredibly grateful Ian Tooley who played the trumpet which was extremely poignant.
While serving tea and biscuits in the school hall our Year 6 pupils presented displays of their wonderful World War 1 topic work they have produced this term; family trees, trenches, artwork, letters and poetry, to our visitors.
The service itself gave a chance to remember the acts of great devotion, courage, loyalty, kindness and bravery that took place on a daily basis not only during WW1 but in all the subsequent wars and conflicts since then. As we watched our poppies blowing in the wind, listened to poetry and individual experiences and remembered the 888,246 men in WW1 who gave the ultimate sacrifice of their lives for our country, we prayed and thought of the soldiers, airmen and sailors from all the wars from all countries who shall grow not old as we that are left grow old, age shall not weary them.
As the service was outside it was often very difficult for the children to hear but all of our pupils showed the greatest respect and honoured the memory of the dead with reverence.

Remembrance Service

You are welcome to join us for our Remembrance Service from 9.30am by our poppy field when we will be joined by some members of the British Legion and some retired military personnel.
The school hall will be open from for complimentary drinks and a biscuit and to view the
amazing work of our Year 6 pupils who have created the most realistic models of WW1 trenches as
well as researching their family trees which include information about relatives who served in
WW1.

Year 5 visit Harry Potter Studios

On the early hours of Thursday the 6th November, 60 children and 13 teachers arrived at school before the sun had risen, ready and raring to go on our trip to Warner Brothers Studios in London. The day was filled with excitement, fun, learning and lots and lots of road works, and is most definitely a trip we will all remember for many years to come!

'The best part about either day was when Katie and Emily pushed open these huge, oak doors to reveal the Great Hall set behind! It was the actual set that was used in the movies. Amazing!'

'In the first section we got to go around all the sets and see all the tricks in filming. For example, the really long hallways are made by an awesome camera trick called 'Forced Perspective'. My favourite set however was Dumbledore's Office, as there was so many different things to look at.'

'I absolutely loved Diagon Alley. We got to stand outside our favourite shops and look through the windows to see all the props and sets. We could even see where the wand shop was set on fire by the special effects people!'

'My most memorable moment was when we got to ride the broomstick and car through the London streets.... It was magic. (Not really - we were just learning how a green screen worked!)'

'We actually got to walk up to the door of the houses on Privet Drive and knock on them. Did you know they are only half built? I had never realised till we saw them!'

'The most amazing part of the day was seeing the Hogwarts Castle... It was enormous even though it was only a model... When they filmed the scenes they moved the camera around over the top to make it look full sized. In the winter they even sprinkle snow on with a sieve for that wintery feel. I was amazed when I saw it.'

All of the children were impeccably behaved and excellent representatives of a Silverhill primary school. Well done Year 5!

Year 6 visit Denstone College

Last week all our year 6 pupils were invited to Denstone College to be a part of their cadet accademy for a World War experience. After a delicious dinner in the beautiful college dining hall, the children tried their skills at marching in formation, putting up tents, wearing the cadet uniform and trench coat, holding a genuine (but unloaded!) rifle and even sampling some ration pack food!

Local footballing mascots

It seems Matthew, Dylan and Jack from year 5 had a great time at the recent FA Cup match at Mickleover Sports when they were all mascots and ball boys. Unfortunately the team lost to a late goal and missed out on a replay, but the boys really enjoyed their afternoon.

The boys all play for the Mickleover Sports under 10's teams.

Good luck in future games boys!
