Egg mystery...

Last week children in the Peregrine's class were surprised to discover a mystery egg. They kept it safe in the classroom all week, waiting for any signs of it hatching. During Thursday, children noticed a large crack appear in the shell and some children even saw and heard it move!

To their surprise, when they returned to school on Friday, the egg had hatched! Whatever had come out of the egg had managed to escape out of the window leaving a trail of destruction and blue slime behind it! The area was sealed off while staff and pupils searched for further clues as to what exactly it might have been.

Homebase Help...

Over the next term we will be joined every Wednesday by Jez and Lucy from Homebase. They will be working with the pupils and helping us on some school grounds gardening projects. We look forward to welcoming them into school and seeing the projects come to life over the coming months.

Many congratulations to the school choir who again made it through to the finals of the Westfield choir competition. The children performed 3 songs beautifully to make it through the first stages to then perform again in the final and even managed a slot on the evening news! Well done children - we're very proud of you all!

It's a baby!

Last week our Key Stage 1 pupils all took to the stage to perform to pupils, friends and parents the annual nativity. The traditional story of Christmas was performed through drama and song by our Year 2 pupils with additional songs and dances from all our year 1 and reception pupils. A huge well done to all the children who performed so beautifully and to all the staff who work so hard behind the scenes!

During November Silverhill played host and welcomed some very special visitors to our school from India as a part of our international link with Mumbai. This has proven to be an extremely valuable cultural experience and we were very proud to show off our school.

Operation Christmas Child Update

On Monday 22nd November the School Council helped pack off just under 40 boxes will now be sent to children in third world countries thanks to your generosity. Silverhill goes spotty for Children in Need

Thank you for supporting Children in Need. We have had a really super day with a special assembly in the morning. The “Wear something spotty” theme was very well supported and there were some imaginative costumes! Special thanks to Mrs Lowe, Mrs Caborn & Mrs Attwell for decorating the spotty cakes. The amount raised so far is in excess of £400. Well done everyone!

Book fair success

Thanks to everyone who supported the Book Fair, and thanks also to those who helped outwith the organisation and sales. Sales at the Book Fair totalled £880. This means that we are able to obtain books to the value of £468 for the school – a magnificent achievement.

Good to be Green

This year Silverhill is again supporting the Samaritan's Purse 'Operation Christmas Child' appeal. Last year we collected just over 50 boxes that were sent to children in third world countries and this year we would love to do more. Maths lesson of DOOM....

On Thursday 3rd November all our pupils enjoyed Quantum Theatre's 'Maths lesson of Doom'. With lots of singing, dancing and catchy rhymes to remember important mathematical concepts, the children were thoroughly entertained whilst finding out if Mrs Jessop would be able to save the day!

Year 6 'Bikeabilty'...

During the last week of October all our Year 6 pupils took part in the 'cyclederby' bikeabilty scheme. All children bought bike and helmets to school and every day were given level 2 training. Well done to everyone who successfully rook part.

World War 2 at Shugborough...

As a part of their World War 2 learning, Years 5 and 6 visited Shugborough Hall. While there, the children were given the opportunity to be 'evacuee children' and were sent to the farm where an air raid siren sent them running to hide out in the bunker. Children found out exactly how little was available through rationing and learnt how children passed their time with song and dance during hard times. They looked at a wide range of WW2 memorabilia as well as visiting an Anderson Shelter, making their gas masks and identity cards. Apart from closed roads delaying the return journey a great day was had by all!

Football News

Well done to the school football team who have had a good start to the season. A 2-0 and 0-2 scoreline against St Josephs at the start of term saw Samuel as man of the match. Playing against Meadows a simaliar scoreline of 1-0 and 0-1.

In the cup a great start, again playing St Josephs with a 0-0 draw at the end of full time, Silverhill boys won 3-2 on penalties and are through to the second round. Well done boys!

Harvest

Thank to everyone who supported our Harvest Assembly this year. Key Stage 1 contributions of tinned good and toiletries were warmly welcomed by the Padley Centre who help the homeless. With golbal issues in mind, Key Stage 2 supported UNICEF with a financial contribution that will go towards the East AFrica appeal.

Enrichment

The sun was warm and bright for our Environment Enrichment afternoons this week. The school grounds were busier than ever before as all our pupils got involved with a range of activities from tub planting to tree mobiles, mini beast and scavenger hunts to cooking from the forest garden and pond dipping to stick art sculptures.

Global Children's Challenge

The Global Children's Challenge has begun! All our Year 4, 5 and 6 pupils (and their teachers!) all have their pedometers and are walking on their 'virtual' journey around the world. The challenge began on Thursday 15th September and will finish on Thursday 3rd November. All classes will record their steps daily on the GCC website which will track their journey around the world as they learn about health, nutrition, exercise and the places they visit on their 'virtual' walk.

Well done to all our fantastic award winners this year. A lovely assembly attended by all pupils, staff and parents, saw Freddie, Lewis, Jazmin, Reuben, Tyler, Tyrell, Brandon, Abigail, Arvin, Imogen, Charlie, Anjulee, Tommy, Ben, Phoebe and Abbie collect awards for their effort, progress or attitude to their school work. For our Year 6 pupils, the award for creativity was awarded to Lucy, whilst Kiara recieved the Whitlam Shield for effort. Year 6 awards were also presented to Edvin for art, Bethany for citizenship, Ciara for music, Gurveer for sports boy and Amy for sports girl. The award for English was given to Karam and the award for Maths was given to Josh. Mrs Brundish presented awards to Zack and Gurveer who both received a Golden Boot and Zack also was presented with the Player of the Year Award. Finally, Mrs Nash presented this years Headteacher Award to Leon. Many, many congratulations to all our winners. We are very proud of you all!

Despite the forcast of heavy rain, both Key Stage 1 and 2 held fantastic sports days once again. The children had a great time and, as ever, took part with enthusiam and good spirit. This year saw France and Swizerland joint winners of Key Stage 2, with Switzerland also taking 1st place for Key Stage 1! At Silverhill we actively encourage children and parents to engage with environmental issues. Many iconic landmarks will be turning off their lights for Earth Hour, including Big Ben, Wembly,the Albert Hall and the BT tower. Why not turn off the lights and do something different for an hour? Have a late supper by candle light, play hide and seek in the dark, read a book in bed by torch light? Turn of your lights for an hour on Saturday 26th March at 8.30 in support of Earth Hour and tell us next week what you did with your hour!

Gymnastics win

Silverhill took part in the Derby Year 1 and 2 Gymnastics Competition at SPringwood Leisure Centre on Thursday 10th March. The team of 6 performed a floor routine, a body management routine and a vault. All the children have been practising on a Thursday at Gym Club as well as in their living rooms at home. Mrs Brundish was incredibly proud of all the gymnasts that took part and the team won the bronze award for third place out of 18 schools. The competition also included individual prizes and Anna won the Silver prize for second place. Well done girls!

Number Day

At 11am on 3 December 2010 Silverhill Primary joined other schools across the UK to join in the NSPCC Number Day in their attempt to set the Guinness World Record™ for the largest maths lesson in the world and to raise money for vulnerable children across the UK. Thank you to all who supported this event - we raised a total of £117.28p and the 290 pupils who took part will be added to the World Record.

Thanks to Abbie and Alysha winning an Asda competition the whole school had an amazing surprise guest today when Miley Cyrus popped into assembly! Pupils and staff were treated to a sing along after Miley answered some of the children's questions and the whole school sang Happy Birthday to Miley for her 18th birthday in a couple of weeks time! WOW!

Harvest

On Friday 1st October Silverhill celebrated Harvest in a magnificent musical assembly with singing contributions from Key Stage 1 up to Year 6. Alongside some superb home grown produce pupils from Key Stage 1 donated dried food for the Padley Centre and our Key Stage 2 pupils raised ** for the Pakistan Floods appeal. Thank you to everyone who contributed.

Rammie visits awards assembly

Our awards pupils had a special treat this week when Rammie came to promote the DCFC school outings. On Saturday 30th October Derby County play Watford in a 3pm kick off. This is the 'Silverhill' game where pupils can get discounted tickets, a parade around the pitch before the match, a school photo on the pitch with copies for every pupil attending and one for the school. Tickets are £18 for adults and £8 for children. Further information from the school office.

For the second year running the sun shone on Silverhill sports days and the temperature was HOT! All the children had a thoroughly enjoyable time and took part whole heartedly. Thank you to all the parents who turned out to support and encourage the children. We hope you enjoyed the days as much as we all did. In KS2 the Brazil Team earned the most points. In KS1 the cucumbers earned first place. Special effort awards in Key Stage 1 were given to Alex, Isabel, Rachel, Ffion and Elailsa.

World Cup week

The week of 21st June was World Cup week in Silverhill. Children kept their fingers crossed for England and completed a wide range of activites to do with the World Cup. What a pity England didn't do so well!

Willow weaving

During the week 14th June all children took part in willow weaving workshops with Carol Beavis resulting in these beautiful sculptures. Many thanks to the PTFA for funding this Carol for running the workshops and to the children for the fantastic weaving!

Rose update!

On 16th May, Rose competed at national level in Stoke on Trent. At the National finals she finished 8th out of 13. This means that she is the 8th best tumbler in the country at her age and level.

Rose also competed at the Derbyshire County championships on all four pieces of apparatus. There were 25 girls in the competition. She finished 3rd on the asymmetric bars, picking up a bronze medal. She finished 6th on the beam, 12th on the vault and 13th on the floor making Rose 6th overall. Her next competition for tumbling will be in December. Good luck Rose!

Supporting Earth Hour

It’s the young people in our schools today who will live through the worst – or best – effects of the action we take now on climate change. And today’s students will be tomorrow’s citizens and decision-makers: we need to ensure they have the skills and knowledge to make wise choices about the future of our planet. At Silverhill we actively encourage children and parents to engage with environmental issues. This week the children have been learning about how to save energy, the need to conserve resources and why we need to expand the use of renewable energy. As part of the Global Initiative Earth Hour, we would invite you to participate by turning all the lights off for an hour on Saturday at 20:30.

Sport Relief 2010

On Friday 19th March Silverhill pupils and staff supported Sport Relief. For a £1 donation children came to school dressed in their sports clothes and some of the teachers dressed in the Silverhill netball kit started the day with a very special Take 10! Thank you to everyone for their kind donations with raised a super £360 for a great charity.

Year 2 visit the Gurdwara

On Wednesday 17th March our Year 2 pupils went to visit the Sikh Gurdwara Derby. To support the RE curriculum children observed first hand many Sikh traditions including prayer, the 5 K's and Langer when the children sampled some wonderful traditional food.

Mad Science

During National Science Week all our pupils had hands on experience of some 'Mad Science'. From making slime and bubbles to electricity children took a step back in time to trace the history of science, linking important science concepts to influential scientists including Aristotle, Newton and Galileo.

Super Rose....

On 14th February Rose came first in the Derbyshire County tumbling competition, at level national one. On 27th February Rose came first in the regional tumbling competition, at level national one. She now goes onto the national finals during May in Stoke. Well done to Rose for a fantastic achievement so far and we wish you all the best for that national finals. 100% attendance

On our ‘Hats for Haiti’ day we said congratulations to our pupils who have achieved 100% attendance. Well done to Grace, Matthew, Jack, Ella, Naomi, Michael, Emily, Hannah, Sam, Alex, Mitchell, Alistair and Daniel who all received their 100% attendance for the last academic year. Special mention went to Tom, Max and Molly who have achieved 2 years 100% attendance and a very special well done to Chloe who has now attended school very day for the last 3 years! Hats for Haiti

On Friday 29th January pupils and staff wore their 'Hats for Haiti'. With the money from the Table Top sale and donations of 50p to wear a hat, the total raised is £800. We will also be donating the proceeds from the Textile Recycling on Wednesday, 3rd February to the Help for Haiti fund. If you would like to make any further cash donations please send them to the school office so that they can be included in the total which will be forwarded after the textile collection.

On Tuesday, 26th January our Year 6 pupils will be setting up the hall for a table top sale to raise money for the people of Haiti. Pupils are invited to bring some spending money for when they visit the sale through the afternoon. The sale will then be open to parents from 3.15 – 4.00 p.m. If you are unable to attend the sale but would like to send a (cash) donation please put it in an envelope marked “Haiti Appeal” and send it to the school office.

On Friday the 2^nd October 2009 RAGTEX visited school to tell the children to get rid of their unwanted clothes so they can give them to people in Zambia. School will get £400 for every 1tonne of clothing. The material can be anything from bed linen to skirts as long as it is in good condition.

It was a very enjoyable match we won both matches we really enjoyed it. The man of the match is to be announced next week. The score was 6-1 in the first match and in the second match we won 1-0.

The Shoe Aid Project is a shoe donation project which aims to motivate those who are fortunate enough to have pairs of shoes which they no longer need into donating them to people in Africa. Horrible Histories...

On Thursday 24th September Year 5/6 went to Nottingham Theatre Royal to watch Horrible Histories Woeful Second World War.

Woeful Second World War was about Alf and Sally who get evacuated to darkest Wales, away from the damp shelters and nightly bombings of their home city – only to encounter rotten rations, scary schools and even scarier new parents. In the second half of the show, children wore 3D specs to see the amazing Bogglevision effects, preparing for the final onslaught as the German bombers make their deadly journey towards Coventry!

It was a fantastic trip thoroughly enjoyed by all!

Goodbye Year 6....

The final week saw laughter and tears as our year 6 came to the end of their time at Silverhill. During their Leavers Assembly pupils, staff and parents were entertained by some very funny moments and moved by some very emotional ones! Congratualtions to Matthew who was presented with our Headteachers Award. On their final day shirts and dresses were all signed, and as the heavens opened at 3.20pm we clapped them out of the hall for the final time. We wish all our Year 6 every success as they embark on the next journey of their education.

Well done to all our fantastic award winners this year. A lovely assembly attended by all pupils, staff and parents saw Sophie, Anna, Ben, Danny, Jodie, Amaan, Habeel, Joe and Jack collect awards for their effort and attitude to their school work. For our Year 6 pupils, Miss Ellis returned to present Daniel with the trophey for creative writing. Ellie Lee and Humaira shared the Lyn Brookes award for creativity whilst Sam and Aaron shared the Whitlam shield for effort. Awards were also shared between Kabwe and Annabel for art, Kimberly and Emma for citizenship, Craig and George for sports boys and Georgia and Lucy for sports girls. Ellen was awarded the trophey for music, Molly for English, Megan for maths and Daniel for science. Finally Simon Brundish presented awards to our football team. Craig returned to the front to receive the golden boot and Ryan was presented with the player of the year award. Many, many congratulations to all our winners. We are very proud of you all!

Sports Days

For once the sun shone on Silverhill sports days and the temperature was HOT! All the children had a thoroughly enjoyable time and took part whole heartedly. Thank you to all the parents who turned out to support and encourage the children. Well done to all parents who even took part! We hope you enjoyed the days as much as we all did. In KS2 Emerald Team earned the most points. In KS1 Strawberries and Apples held joint first place.

Green Day

On Thursday 25th June children and staff took part in Green Day. The day was devoted to activities to learn more about the effect of climate change and what we can do to reduce the effects of global warming. The children engaged in a number of activities including; learning about polar bears and penguins, making tree mobiles and wind energy, the damage to the environment from plastic bags, making electricity fromcitrus fruits and many other exciting workshops. The day culminated in the children making their environmental promises which are displayed on our Environmental Promise Tree. Everyone learned a great deal about climate change and we hope our actions, however small, will have a positive effect on global warming.

Mrs Lowe's Parachute Jump!

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No - it's Mrs Lowe!

120 miles per hour free falling and the first thing Mrs Lowe said .....

"Can I do it again!"

On Sunday the 21st of June Mrs Lowe did a tandem parachute jump. She did it at about ten past 12 in the morning. She jumped from 13,000 feet (2 and 3 quarter miles up!) She did free falling for about 50 seconds at 120 miles an hour! Then on parachute she fell for about five or six minutes. She landed safely. Mrs Lowe said “It was absolutely amazing! And I wanted to go back up and do it again” She would like to thank everybody that sponsored her she has raised approximately £550 for Break Through Breast Cancer.

Summer Fayre

Year 2 trip to Sudbury

On Thursday 18th June Year 2 went oon their school trip to Sudbury Hall and the Museum of Childhood. The children all dressed up in their fantastic victorian outfits and had a very strock lesson in the old schoolroom! They played with victorian toys and learned about how victorian children llived and worked. The children had a go at climbing the chimney and even Mrs Mitchell had a go - and nearly got stuck!

On Friday 5th June staff and pupils attended a ceremony at the East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham. We are delighted to report that Mrs White and Mrs Lowe were awarded commendations in the Teaching and Teaching Assistant categories. The whole school was awarded a distinction for the Sustainable Schools category. Well done to all our finalists!

The trim trail is finished......

As you may have seen if you have been onto the playground, the trim trail is now finished and is infull use for the pupils of Silverhill, who have been enjoying it very much. On Friday 5th all classes went out for their first go and it is now timetabled for use every playtime and lunchtime so that everyone gets their turn. A reminder please that no pupils or pre-school children are allowed on the trim trail before or after school. Thank you.

Trim trail construction begins....

The construction of the trim trail is in progress and will be ready (touch wood) by Friday (5th of June) and will be built by the time we return after the polling day. It has been coming along very quickly. Our thanks go to the PTFA who have raised the money for the purchase and installation a cost of at least £8,000. Pond dipping...

Last Thursday Shrub club went down to our new pond and investigated what they saw below the water. They found lots of tadpoles and frogspawn which is not surprising as lots of students have seen frogs around! Here are the other things that they saw: nymphs, pond snails, water beetles & the greater water boatman. We are sure we will see lots more of these creatures as the weather gets warmer! (hopefully)

Year 3 trip to Castleton

The year 3’s enjoyed some action- packed days when they went to Castleton in the Peak District. The activities included archery, climbing the hills and visiting the village’s own historic castle. We also hear that they thoroughly enjoyed the delicious breakfasts giving them energy to stay active all day. At night they looked forward to playing games before they went upstairs to bed for a well-earned rest.

Foundation Stage trip to Chatsworth

On Wednesday 25th of March the children in reception went to Chatsworth Farm, to learn more about animals and growth. They met the pigs and calves, held chicks, bottle fed lambs and had thoroughly enjoyable day. Mrs Brundish was very fond of the baby donkey foal, Barney who was only 5 days old – ahhh! Well done to all the children, who behaved very well. Also thank you to Mrs Temple, Mr Finely, and Mrs Muter, who came along to help!

Dance Festival

Well done to all the children who took part in the dance festival 2009 on Wednesday 25th of March. There was a packed audience at the assembly rooms and all the dancers performed brilliantly. They had a fabulous time. We will see how they did soon.

ECO worm hunting

The Eco committee have been very busy this past week searching for worms in the school grounds and fields. They found around six different types and a worm specialist came in to help them.
They have also planned, designed and this week will be making a habitat hotel. They have also done lots of other exciting things in the past including helping with our school allotments and tidying up the school grounds.

We are pleased to announce that Silverhill Primary has reached the finals of the National College for School Leadership Sustainability Awards. Yesterday the judges were shown around by year 6 pupils Rob, Chris, Matt, Molly and Ellen and were shown all the eco friendly things we do. We are one of three schools out of all the schools in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Northhamptonshire and Lincolnshire in the final. Do something funny for money update!

On Friday the 13th of March Silverhill Primary was 'Funny for Money'. Everyone made a fantastic effort to look funny from clowns and 118 men to superheroes and barbie girls - and that was just the teachers! Mrs Parr lead a super assembly where we learned about the children in Africa that we were raising money for. Mrs Parr was joined by Mrs White, Mrs Turner and Mrs Mitchell to do a spelling test and our year 6 pupils announced the results of their fund raising competitions. It's Red Nose day this Friday so there are a variety of games taking place in school all week, less than a pound a go. There is “guess the name of the lion” only 20p a go and “Ickle Diddims” - have a good look at all the pictures and for £1 a go guess which teacher matches the picture.

Year 3 trip to Snibston

On Tuesday 10th 2009 Year 3 went to Snibston Discovery Park in Leicestershire. They left at 9:00am and left the coach in 2 groups, doing different activities at different times. Group 1 had a tour in a coal mine first then went to a gift shop to spend some money. Towards the end of the day, they went to an “explosive room” where they pressed lots of buttons and made loud noises. They finally arrived at school at around 2:00 am. Year 2 Trip to the Gurdwara

On Wednesday 4th March Year 2 went to the Gurdwara Sikh temple. The children were impeccably behaved as they sat and listened to a talk on the temple and heard all about the Sikh religion. The children visited the prayer room where they were all given a sweet gift before they went downstairs to the kitchen to taste a range of traditional food. The trip back to school was good fun as they ate their sweets on the top of the double decker bus.

Fair Trade Day

On Tuesday 3rd of March our school went 'Bananas for Fairtrade'. Our giant inflatable banana travelled around the classrooms all day and brought with it a fair-trade banana for every pupil.
Fairtrade is to help farmers in third world countries get fair prices for their crops. Fairtrade doesn’t just focus on food. You can get Fairtrade clothes, footballs, cotton wool & other things that farmers in third world countries can produce.
Later on at 3:00 pm we held a Fairtrade café. We sold tea, coffee, juice and cereal bars. All of them were Fairtrade and were sold for 20p.

SCHOOL COUNCIL ACHIEVEMENT

Well done to Mrs Orgill and the School Council for attaining bronze status on their School Council Award.

They have shown that the pupils operate a democratic system, know their roles and responsibilities and are able to influence changes that help to make our school a better place to learn and play.

They are now forging ahead with the criteria for the Silver Award.

Thursday February 5th

We have managed to keep the school open with a skeleton staff. All staff have attempted to get to school but many have been unable to do so because of the treacherous conditions in Derby and the surrounding area.

We will take into consideration the weather conditions later on today and consult with the Education Authority before making a final decision as to whether to close school tomorrow. All other primary schools in the area are closed.

We will endeavour to keep the school open but please refer to this website, Radio Derby and Ram FM for any changes that may occur.

One of the most difficult decisions to make is whether to keep school open or closed during the bad weather.

With the snow still falling, and following advice from the Met Office about freezing temperatures and more snow expected overnight I have decided to close school on Tuesday 3rd February 2009.

If you hear nothing further then expect school to re-open on Wednesday 4th February 2009. Any further closures will be published on this site and through Radio Derby.

Although I am sorry for any convenience this may cause, the safety of staff and pupils must be paramount, including on journeys to and from school.
