Thank you to everyone who supported Grace and Niamh's 'Wear Blue' day in aid of JDRF UK which is the type 1 diabetes charity. After organising the event themselves, the two girls gave their PowerPoint presentation to the rest of the school, explaining what the charity does, why it's so important to Grace and her family and how the money raised can help children with type 1 diabetes. Click here to find out more about JDRF UK. Well done girls - you made us very proud and we look forward to hearing the total amount raised very soon!

Key Stage 2 Sports Day
On Thursday 24th of May, under A LOT of grey clouds, Key Stage 2 took part in our annual sports day. Split into four teams (China, Australia, Equador and Nigeria), the children competed in a number of Olympic themed sports to earn points for their country! The day was full of team spirit and friendly competition, with many previously hidden sporting talents taking the audience by surprise!
Highlights of the day included a couple of our Year 6 boys managing to send the hammer throw flying over the fence and into a nearby house's garden! Miss Downs' very nearly lost her head when one pupil let go of the hammer to soon and sent it straight into the crowd!!
We also had a
large number of willing parents who had a go at a bit of shotput and discus
themselves, some of them sending the balls flying the full length if the
field!
The high jump
was another area where many of the children really shone, with some of our
younger children clearing heights of 1.8m!!!
The same
could not be said unfortunately for the long jump, as an brief spell of showers
early in the day left the mats very wet, leading to a 'water slide' taking it's
place!
As we
progressed into the afternoon we were unfortunate enough to get hit by the
typical British weather, with the rain pouring down heavily and parents,
teachers and pupils taking cover under anything they could find! However it
wasn't enough to stop us, and as soon as there was a break in the weather we
were back out on the field for the relays! Action packed and fast, the runners
gave it their all, making many of the races a very close
call!
Well done to
all the children who took part. It was an excellent day and really showed off
all off Silverhill's sporting talents (including the parents)! Maybe we will see
some of you at the Olympics in years to come!

Story Tent
On Wednesday 22nd May the 'Story Tent' visited school and was much enjoyed by the Robins and the Wrens. The story teller told lots of really funny stories that made us laugh out loud. He changed his voice and made up actions to go along with the story so we could join in. We really enjoyed it!

Kwik cricket
On Tuesday the 22nd of March Silverhill
Primary took a team of 10 to the 1st round, of the Derby City Sports Partnership
Kwik Cricket tournament. We played 3 games against Mickleover, Dale A and St
James
Silverhill-Mickleover was a very close game with Mickleover just coming out on top.
Silverhill-Dale A Was a good game with some good Wickets being taken by both teams, but in the end Dale A came out on top.
Silverhill-St James Silverhill came out and bowled first taking a good amount of wickets away from St James. Ahead by 8 runs Silverhill came out to bat. Unfortunately no match for the superior bowling skills of St James primary and ending in a loss of just 4 runs.
Big congratulations to Kieron DuPlessis for hitting more 6's than anyone else in the tournament.
Also a huge Congratulations and best wishes to Dale who take both their A and B team through to round 2.

Swimming sensation Jamie!
Congratulations to Jamie in Kingfishers on completing his Gold in swimming. Jamie had to swim 40 lengths in 25 minutes to complete his gold. After a fantastic swim he finished with just one minute to spare! Well done Jamie!

Walk to school week
It's walk to school week! Please remember to ditch the car and walk, ride or scoot to school.
WHY?
1) It's a great way to wake yourself up with a bit of exercise before school.
2) It keeps our school entrances free from cars and that makes it a much safer place to be!
3) It reduces fuel emissions - working towards a greener planet!
Go on - do your bit!
Each child who walks, scoots or cycles to school gets a point for their class. Park in the pub car park and walk the final bit - it all helps!
The race is on to see who can get the furthest around our virtual Derby City map! Answer the quiz questions on the way to gain more points!

Year 3/4 off to Oz!
.
In Year 3 and 4 this term the focus for literacy is Fantasy stories, so we
took the children to the cinema to watch the superb Fantasy film, Oz The great
and Powerful, in 3D! The children had a great time and behaved extremely well. We are now incorporating this element of visual literacy
into our writing.... Come back soon to see the results!
Year 5 Transition day at Murray Park
.
On the 23rd of April Year 5 went to Murray Park
Community School for an enrichment day. We got to experience the most amazing
day of education in a secondary school. Year 5 were very thankful that they got
to experience year 7 lessons which were fun, educational and tasty in
cooking! We were blown away by the amount choice there was for lunch; we all had
different food and all thought it was delectable! We would all like to say a
huge thank you to the kind staff at Murray Park for giving us the chance to get a taster of
secondary school.

Year 2 trip to Conkers
.
Last Thursday, Year 2 had a fantastic day at Conkers. We
learnt all about ‘Minibeasts and habitats’ by exploring around the lake, making
a hedgehog home and log rolling to see what insects were hiding underneath. We
also got to play in the ‘Indoor discovery centre’ where we could imagine we
were a badger and got to see the teachers scared of the bat cave. A great day
had by all and the children were on their very best behaviour!
Well done Year
2!
