Graffiti Stars

Year 6 spent the day on Tuesday 19th June working with Leon from Graffit Stars. The children were all able to create their own amazing pieces of graffiti art as well as contributing to a large piece for the school. The work is part of the children's study of the famous graffiti artist Banksey and the discussion around 'Is graffiti and art or vandalism?'. The children had a great day with Leon and really enjoyed the opportunity to try something so different. Many thanks to our wonderful PTFA for part funding this event.

Woodwind concert

The children enjoyed performing in their woodwind concert this morning. They showcased pieces on oboe, flute and clarinet.

Football's coming to Silverhill!

With the buzz of the Football World Cup building we have certainly got into the SPIRIT of things! On Thursday, Children were invited to come to school in their sporting kits and on Friday, the Year 5 and 6 pupils took part in an intra-house tournament. After some very close score lines, diamonds were declared winners and went on to play in our England (pupils) V. Tunisia (staff). Watched by the rest of the school the 'staff' took the victory - despite to growing England team of nearly 30 players - wit a 3-0 win. Although everyone had a great time and a rematch has been called, we hope the final score is no reflection on the real result! Well done to everyone who took part!

Guitar concert

On Wednesday 13th June the school was presented with a Guitar Concert, that was a showcase of what the children have been working on during Guitar Lessons in school with Mr Rutherford. They each played a piece of their choosing which was a great opportunity for a bit of a sing along too!

Cluster Netball Competition

On Tuesday 12th June Mrs Brundish took a group of our fantastic year 6 to a cluster netball competition at Ravensdale Juniors. Although we didn't make it through to the semi-finals we showed lots of Silverhill SPIRIT. Mrs Brundish is very proud for the brilliant, determined display they put on. Well done everyone!

Able writers workshop

On Thursday 14th June, some of our lucky Year 3 and 4 children were invited to attend a writing workshop with published author, Harriet Goodwin. They were given some wonderful advice about how to improve their writing even further and were even able to take home a signed copy of one of her books. We can't wait to share some of their amazing writing after such wonderful support!

Busy in Year 2

It's been a busy time in Year 2. Last week Peregrine class had an exciting afternoon exploring the grounds. They hunted for minibeasts and looked at pond creatures and really enjoyed using the microscopes and binoculars.

Kestrels also had a fun afternoon with the RSBP searching for birds, bugs and exploring the pond wildlife within our school grounds.  Thank you Rosalind at the RSPB for a super time.

Then, on Thursday 14th June Peregrine class visited Mickleover Library.  They enjoyed reading a range of fiction and non-fiction books and are hoping to borrow some of these from the library in the future.

Seven Trent workshops

On Wednesday 6th June, Severn Trent Water came into school and explained how important water is.  Too many people are wasting precious water because every minute you are in the shower, you waste 9 LITRES!  Also 97% of water in the world is salt water, 2% is ice and only 1% is fresh.  On the other hand, some people save water and that is really important.  So decide. Are you a water saver or a water waster?

Ship ahoy!

On Wednesday June 6th there was a lot of 'Shiver me timbers' and 'Arhh me arties' in our Foundation Stage unit when Maggot Tom dropped anchor for a visit to talk to the children all about a pirate's life. Learning about the parts of a ship, making some 'hard tack' ship biscuits and acting some great pirate stance role play sword fighting the children had a thoroughly enjoyable day.

Florence Nightingale visits Year 2

On Monday 6th June Florence Nightingale came to visit Year 2 to teach them all about her life.  This wonderful interactive workshop gave children the opportunity to become one of Florence's nurses and an understanding of what life was like in the past.  What a fantastic morning Year 2 had!
