Sports Days

For once the sun has shone down beautifully on BOTH of our school sports days! On the morning of Monday 19th May all of our Key Stage 1 pupils energetically took part in a carousel of sporting activities. On Wednesday, one of the hottest days of the year so far, Key Stage 2 took to the field for the day to successfully complete a wide range of running, throwing and jumping events. Congratulations to all the children who, on both days, demonstrated wonderful sportsmanship and thank you to the parents turned up in their droves to support. Thank you to all the wonderful teaching staff who ensured that the children were so well prepared and the days ran so smoothly, especially Mrs Brundish for managing the two events.

Code club update

A little update from Kode Club to share the exciting news that we have won 5 new Raspberry Pis for school!! As part of the ‘Hour of Code’ initiative, the Raspberry Pi foundation opened up a competition to all schools in England to win some Raspberry Pis for their schools. All we had to do was complete one hour of programming and share what we achieved. For the hour, we had a go at recreating the PACMAN game using scratch – a definite challenge! With over 750 registered schools and 15,000 children coding we could only hope. However, a month later, an email dropped into Miss Downs’ box to tell us that we had won 5!! Each kit comes with the Pi, a case and a project book. Well done Kode Club.

Day out in Dovedale for Year 6

After getting through our annual SATs and toast week, on Friday 16th May our Year 6 enjoyed a well earned break from school with a day out in Dovedale. Following a picturesque walk by the river and an explore in the caves, the children enjoyed a nice picnic lunch in the sunshine before managing to stay dry over the stepping stones (well, most of them!)

Once all batteries were recharged it was a gentle stroll (ok, a massive mountain climb) up to the top of Thorpe Cloud. While some children (and Mr F) almost ran up, a few needed a little more encouragement but we ALL made it to the top (and safely back down again!) to enjoy a much deserved ice cream!

Year 5 Starfish and Coffee

Back in March a group of very excited Year 5 pupils performed at the Derby City SSP dance festival 2014. Choreographed by Mrs Brundish all her work and the pupil's hard work certainly paid off. See for yourself...

Budding engineers.....

Children in Year 2 and Year 4 recently took part in the Primary Engineer project in conjunction with Rolls-Royce. The challenge was to design and make a moving vehicle. Four children were selected to take their creations along to the Primary Engineer Challenge Event, which was held on Saturday May 10th at the Rolls-Royce Learning and Development Centre.

The vehicles were put through their paces in a variety of tests including moving in a straight line, driving up an incline and distance travelled. A fun time was had by all and congratulations go to Reuben, Katie and Alice for their fantastic designs and a special well done to Jason, who won first prize in the theme category.

Starting on Monday with reading comprehension, SPaG on Tuesday, and maths on Wednesday and Thursday, we know they have all work exceptionally hard and are going to be great! We're all looking forward to a day out in Dovedale on Friday! Good luck everyone!

Parent Governor vacancy

We now have a vacancy for a parent governor position at our school. This is a chance for you as a parent to have an influence over the education the school provides for all its children.  Governors make decisions about many aspects of the school including the curriculum, staffing and the school’s finances.
Their role is vital to the education of the children so we would urge you to consider standing.  In case you feel a bit daunted by the responsibilities, we will offer training to help you understand your role as a governor and you will be allocated a mentor to help support you whilst you learn.

If you think you have the skills and time to give to this essential post please contact the school office for further details.

Golden Lock

We are so proud of the children who regularly cycle to school we like to reward them with our 'Golden Lock'. Every week one lucky bike owner returns to their bile at the end of the day to find our golden padlock attached! The only way to release the bag is to choose something from the lucky dip! Congratulations to Lewis from Kestrels, our week one winner and to Oliver from Larks, our week 2 winner. Keep cycling everyone!
