Hockey competition

A huge well done to all the Year 6 children who took part in the Year 5/6 hockey comp at Derby Academy, Sinfin last week. Our first game was against a very good Dale side who went on the to win the competition. We lost the first game but found our groove in the 2nd game against St James with some great goals and a fantastic win. Unfortunately we lost the 3rd game and did not progress but Mrs Brundish was incredibly proud of the squad, especially as we had not had time to practise before the event!

Derby book festival

We are proud to be able to have taken part in the Derby Book Festival and were able to take a number of children to their ‘meet the author’ events.

On Thursday 9 June a group of year 6 children went to the QUAD to see Andy Mulligan the author of the Ribblestrop books and Trash.  He told the children about the inspiration for his stories and told tales of his adventures whilst teaching abroad. He answered some the children’s questions about his life as an Author and stopped behind after the presentation to sign books for the children.

On Monday 13th June we took some of our year 3 & 4 children to Derby Theatre to visit Lauren Child, the lady responsible for creating the Charlie and Lola books and their television series. She has written and illustrated a large number of children’s books and spoke to the children about  how she came up with the ideas for her stories and told them about the people who help her come up with some of characters. She also gave the children some ideas of how they can illustrate their own stories.

Both events were hugely inspirational and the children really enjoyed meeting the authors.

Ahoy me hearties!

This week, The crew of Robins and Wrens boarded the good ship Silverhill and set sail with Maggot Tom for a pirate adventure! We learnt all about the parts of the ship, including port and starboard and had a look at some 'hard tack' aka ships' biscuits. We decided we wanted to keep our teeth, so we didn't try them.  We were all dressed to impress with eyepatches, cutlasses and even a parrot! Captain Smith and Captain Turner were in charge of us scurvy sea dogs while we played lots of games including shark attack, and we finished the day with a sword fight and a pirate story. We loved meeting a real life pirate and asking him lots of questions, including how he got his name: Maggot Tom. Taraaarrrrrrrrgghhh for now!

Golf competition

On Tuesday 24th May our team of Year 5 pupils took part in the Derby City SSP TriGolf competition. Despite being a 'man' down, the children showed tremendous team spirit and thoroughly enjoyed taking part.

Key Stage 2 sports day

Unlike Key Stage 1 sports day the weather was grey, overcast and rather chilly for our Key Stage 2 sports day on Thursday 26th May! Energetically pupils perfectly warmed up with the their superheros moves before moving on to demonstrate all their sporting skills in front our the scores of proud parents who came to support. Please visit our twitter page to watch some super slow motion video clips from the day! The children did a magnificent job in all activities, particular congratulations to the winning team Australia and to our individual winners of 'performers of the day' for showing such fantastic Olympic values.

Gymnastics success

Congratulations to Sophia and Seren who both competed in the 6-7 category at UK Level 9 at the UK Gymnastics Competition in Milton Keynes, as part of the Starlets Team at Mickleover Gymnastics Club.   They both did absolutely brilliantly in this national competition with over 200 entrants from all over the UK. Sophia won a Gold Medal on the beam and Silver Medal for her complex routine on the bars whilst Seren won silver on the beam.  Well done girls!
